Dear Gurus,

as usual, answers came quickly and I learned some more about backdrops
in CDE. The first and most precise answer was from
Volker Becker <becker_at_eurocontrol.de>:
you have to select 'No Backdrop' as a background image for CDE.

Other interesting things:

From: Paul Watson <phwatso_at_cooper-energy-services.com>
What we do is make a .dt/backdrops directory in the users directory and
then use xv to save an image as an XPM format, then save this image in the
.dt/backdrops directory with a .pm file extension. Then when you logout
and login again this image is available along with the standard backdrops
   from the Style Manager.

From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Christian_M=F6nch?= <cristian_at_tm.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de>
for xv: xv -root -quit <filename>

And thanks to
Dieter Meinert <dieter.meinert_at_aip.de>

Thanks again,
Gerhard
