For over a year, I have been using an AlphaServer 255 without any major
problems. Last month, I installed DU 4.0D with Patch Kit #3 on this
system. About a week ago, I added an external hard drive to it and moved
all my /usr/local stuff to it. Since I now had more disk space, I also
installed the new Netscape 4.51 and Acrobat 4.0 on this system and they
both worked fine.
I use this workstation with the CDE while logged in as root.
Yesterday, I started having problems. I would try to open up a
Netscape session or another terminal within the CDE and nothing
would happen execpt for a little green light blinking on the
bottom control bar area of the CDE. I could open up Netscape just
fine though, but typing "netscape&" at the Unix prompt in an
existing terminal window.
What I do not understand is why the CDE menu functions started to fail on
me. Last night, just before I left my office for the day, in hopes of
fixing this problem, I rebooted this system. It had not been rebooted in
over a month. When I got to work today, my workstation was booted in line
mode, not in CDE. I have no idea why and I have been fiddling with the
workstation for an hour so far, but nothing I have tried fixes the problem
and allows the workstation to get back to CDE mode.
When I reboot the system, it goes through all the normal startup
procedures just fine, but it just won't boot in CDE mode. I do get an
error after the inspectd daemon attempts to start that says:
stty: tcgettr: Not a typewriter
Ambiguous output redirect
When I log in as root, I see an error that says:
ioctl(TIOCSETD)
which I also get when I try to "su -" into my account on the system. Does
anyone know how to fix this problem.
Also, this workstation has two ethernet cards on it, tu0 and tu1.
They are set to half duplex mode. Although this is not a big deal,
they should really be set at full duplex mode, but I do not know
how to do that. If you know, please share that info with me.
Thanks.
