UPDATE: can't boot workstation :(

Thanks so far to:

Alan Davis and Mike - MikeSAFH_at_aol.com

Some useful pointers (see the following) .. no fix as of yet.

I can mount domain_rz0g#usr manually after booting from the installation CD
and it is not empty.
The /etc/fstab entries are perfect as far as I can see for both partitions -
both with correct names, mountpoints, advfs, userquota, groupquota, rw 0 1 (
/usr has rw 0 2 ).

I've looked through /sbin/bcheckrc and it looks fine as well. No obvious
corruption, it tries to mount root with '/sbin/mount -u /', does a
'/sbin/sysconfig -r generic user_cfg_pt=40100', does a scsimgr -sync then
tries to mount /usr. It never gets to this step from the boot messages I see
- is there perhaps a problem with the sysconfig or the sync ??

Still hopeful,

Danielle

Check your /etc/fstab file. The "spawning too rapidly" message is
/usually/ from the /usr partition not mounting correctly or is empty once
mounted.

The mount_nonfs message sounds like there's an incorrect entry in the fstab
file. The mount command calls other mount_* commands based on the fstype
entry in the fstab file. For advfs it calls mount_advfs for ufs mount_ufs
etc. It's also possible that the /sbin/bcheckrc file has gotten munged up.
One of the things it does is mount the local filesystems with a "mount -a -v
-t nonfs" command.

What's the fs type for the root directory in /etc/fstab? Can you boot
single-user to see that, at least?

I bet there's a typo in the fstab file, and the system thinks that the
fstype
is "non" so it tries to run the mount_nonfs command.

It's a theory, at least.

Original post:

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my Alphastation 200 4/233 on boot that I can't
solve. I'm running DU4.0D patchkit 3 and using advfs.

The boot messages are as per usual until we get to:

Mounting / (root)
user_cfg_pt: reconfigured
exec: /sbin/mount_nonfs -F 81920 root_domain#root /
mount: can't exec /sbin/mount_nonfs: No such file or directory
.
.
update: started.
INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.
id: cons "/usr/sbin/getty console console vt100"
check for possible errors

and hangs here.

I searched the archives and found that the init message about getty are
usual when the root filesystem has not been mounted - so I realise this
isn't the error.

I have run an advfscan -r on the disk after booting from the installation CD
and it finds the domains with no problems. The filesets with their original
names show for each domain using showfsets. I've mounted the root fileset
and had a look at the original /etc/fdmns and it looks fine.

There *is* no such file as /sbin/mount_nonfs on the disk as far as I can
see. I've had a look at other machines running 4.0D and E, and they don't
have a mount_nonfs file in sbin either. Am I missing something really
obvious here ?

help!

Thanks in advance,
