solution was to do dia-R|more for DECevent (which I have installed) 
or uerf.  
We also do DLT backups which are still working (long story, don't ask 
why we do both).
If anyone cares I pasted results at bottom.  Guess it's time to call 
up the support people.  Thanks to respondants.
