SUMMARY:

There has been some great feedback. I chose to pursue Digital's Performance
Manager (PM or PMgr) because it is free and is supported under our Digital
Support agreement.

There is only one catch that I am trying to work through. How can you start
a
PM session at boot time? The command "pmgr -D filename.spm" starts PM but
it doesn't start the session.

Many thanks to the people who have been very helpful with this
consideration.
There feedback follows.

NOCOL from ftp.navya.com. Best I've seen.

Look into Watcher: ftp://ftp.unm.edu/pub/unix/Watcher.tar.Z
It isn't perfect, but it is a nice place to start.

Which version? 4.0x comes with Performance Manager (Associated Products CD,
#2 I believe). It's free for monitoring the local system, non clustered.
It's written in tcl, and you can write your own scripts to add to it. All
in all, a very good product, I think.

Mike,
I am currently using a freely available package called Bigbrother,
available at http://MacLawran.ca/bb-dnld. I use it to monitor all unix
systems, as well as VMS, NT and terminal server connections. I get paged
when something goes wrong, with the IP address and service code. It is
pretty neat. Check it out.
later!

Mike,
I use "Big Brother" to monitor all my machines. It's very
configurable and easy to install.
Check it out:

Mike;
Another sysadmin on this list recommended Big Brother to me. I just started
looking at it myself. If you're interested, check it out at:
