SUMMARY: Alternatives to Microfocus COBOL

It seems that Merant (result of a merger of Microfocus and Intersolv) are
planning to drop support for only the Windows NT/Alpha. Dr Tom Blinn
confirmed that UNIX/Alpha is still going to be supported, and in fact Compaq
is planning to include it on the base kit for Tru64 v5.0.

Since we had chosen Microfocus Cobol based on having a common language
across the three platforms we use -- NT/Intel, NT/Alpha, and Digital Unix,
we're not really happy.

The COBOL alternatives for Tru64 these days seem to be Microfocus, Digital
COBOL (which is also available for WinAlpha but not WinTel), and Acucobol
(http://www.acucobol.com/, available for just about everything. It is
possible that RM/Cobol from Liant (http://www.liant.com) is available for
Alphas, but I couldn't determine that from their web site; they just say
"DOS, Windows, and UNIX."

Just like a real cult language, COBOL has its own homepage:
http://www.cobol.org/.

Thanks to: Stephen LaBelle, H. Blakely Williford, John J. Francini, David J.
DeWolfe, Dr. Tom Blinn, Davis, Pete Joseph, Bobby G Bates, Rob Hamm, and
John H. Warren.
