Solutions to this problem are a bummer:

Simply put.... Yep, you can't span those tapes using vdump from a cron job,
but try using expect.... Have downloaded, installed and am reading like
mad....

Well, not that it matters to you all but.... Here is my "dilemma":

4 4100's, 45 Oracle databases, 20 Progress databases,( all production!!! )
totaling about 1/2 a TB of storage ( give or take 100 GB or so..) MANDATORY
90 day, on hand, FULL backups..... current usage of about 15 DLT IV's
/day.... Boss absolutely will not consider paying for a "better" backup
solution since I've thus far been able to pull a rabbit out of my hat way to
many times.( for those of you counting...... $100,000 in DLT's/year and a
storage nightmare like you wouldn't believe)

I've shuffled and crammed tapes to their limit but now..... I'm out of
options, I need to span tapes and I'll be damned if I'm going to manually
run backups......

I'm thinking that there are greener pastures if you get my drift.......
Sorry to gripe but nobody here can even spell UNIX let alone understand the
importance of backups!!!
