"I've seen this when the EISA configuration hadn't been
updated for whatever was previously on the system. When
it happened to me it was sufficient to boot the EISA
configuration utility (ECU), get it to recognized the
ATI for what it was and then save the configuration."

"There is a need to run the current, up to date, EISA configuration utility
(esp. if you did a firmware upgrade) and make sure that your V4.0E system
has its EISA options configured correctly. On your V4.0D system, your ATI
card is set up correctly in the EISA database, or it would show up as being
a generic VGA option as well.
You probably could just manually edit the configuration file for the V4.0E
system and change "vga" to "ati" on the line that defines the option card,
but I would not promise you that will work (and of course rebuild the kernel
and then reboot with the new kernel)."

Naturally, they are correct, after checking , the EISA config utility was
not run, and I was too tired to remember
to look at the kernel config file. So much for problem solving at the end
of the week.

FWIW, editing the kernel config file wasn't good enough. Have to run the ECU.

Regards to all!

Original problem below!

Good afternoon,

We have two 2100 4/200 systems. Each with identical graphics cards. One
is running V4.0d, (Patch kit 2)and the following is how Unix sees the
graphics adapter (copied from uerf -R)

ati0 at eisa0
ati0: ATI Mach64-GX Rev. 3 (SVGA)

The second just had V4.0E (no patch kits yet) installed, and Unix sees it's
machine's card as:

vga0 at eisa0
640x480 VGA, 16 colors
vga0: generic VGA driver

Anyone else seen this? Anyone know what was done wrong, if anything, on
installation?

As you might imagine, CDE shows rather poorly at VGA resolution!

I will summarize.

Regards,

Bruce
