Phantom live data Directory

We are seeing an odd behavior with our production live data directory.
>From anywhere on the system we can type the command: "cd clivedata" and we
will be moved to the /live/clivedata directory.

For example; starting from my home directory /usr/users/pauld.
I can change directory to /usr/users/pauld/temp as we all know with a "cd
temp".

Now my working directory is /usr/users/pauld/temp.
>From here If I type: "cd clivedata" My current working directory is now
/live/clivedata. How can this be? I would expect to get a "not found"
error message.

This is just making us a little nervous that our live data could be so
visible. Could any user do a "rm -R clivedata" from any were on the
system?

Thanks for your help
