gendisk utility

I am starting to create a software kit to use with setld installations. I am
using the Guide to Preparing Product Kits and find it very useful, however
the last step, using gendisk, has me baffled.

I am running OSF1 v4.0. I have created the software subsets, and editing the
/etc/kitcap file and added a record for the product I am packaging. Now I
want to create a tar formatted kit and send the output to a directory
/install_test/OSF1.
When I run the gendisk utility given in the guide

gendisk ISP100 /dev/rz0a (my root partition is on a on disk 0) it says that
/dev/rz0a is not a valid character special device. Is there a way to
generate a tar formatted file and send it to a directory called
/install_test/OSF1.
The entry I have placed in the /etc/kitcap is as follows

ISP100HD:a:/install_test/OSF1: \
        ISP: \
        /install_test/kit_output:instctrl:ISPcomp1:ISPcomp2

thanks
