I received responses from the following:
Paul A Sand <pas_at_unh.edu>
"Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-884-0646" <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
Kurt Carlson <kcarlson_at_arsc.edu>
Paul had the quickest solution. He provided me with a short Perl
script that removed the bogus entry in /var/adm/utmp for the
specified user & tty name.
Kurt suggested a utility, uaklogin, from:
ftp://raven.alaska.edu/pub/sois/README.uakpacct
ftp://raven.alaska.edu/pub/sois/man.uaklogin
kit:
ftp://raven.alaska.edu/pub/sois/uakpacct-v2.8.tar.Z
Besides producing formatted dumps of w|utmp files,
it reports from the utmp records, terminal access & modify times,
with options to automatically include a process tree of the selected
user(s).
I have downloaded this. I will be checking out for possible future
uses.
My original question was:

> before. I have searched the archives, but found nothing like this.
