This one went clear to the Tru64 Unix Kernel team before an answer was found.
What happened on this system pack (or boot disk) was there were several attempts
at installing other versions of the Tru64 OS. Come to find out that the install
procedure doesn't clean nor right over the disk drives while it is doing an
install.
When I was on the phone with support I noticed that not all the releases of the
sub sets were 435 (or is it 453?). The install procedure just noticed that the
files were installed so it just "skipped" writing to the file(s).
I'm sure I am over simplifying this.
What support had me do was start all over again with the install, booting off of
the cdrom. I exited to the shell and did a "cd /dev", "MAKEDEV rrz2", now the key
was to erase the device with "disklable -z /dev/rrz2". Then I did a "restart" to
restart the install.
This time everything installed with the correct ownership and su-id bit set.
