Xdec X server crash

Hello there,

I have encountered a problem with the X server of Digital Unix, version
4.0E. As long as I run the video in 8 bit (PseudoColor) mode, everything
is fine, apart from the poor quality (8 bits). If I switch to TrueColor
by calling X this way:
       /usr/bin/X11/X -vclass TrueColor -vsync 85 ,
the colours are fine (most of the time), but user programs can crash the X
server. Also, many programs (in particular those using GL graphics), look
even worse than in 8 bit mode. The programs that I have reproducibly got
to crash the X server are xlockmore (version 4.13.1), and IDL (version
5.2).

The relevant hardware: DEC personal workstation 500au with 192, 256 or 640
MB of RAM, PowerStorm 4D10T video adapter (some Elsa Gloria GL card, 8MB).

If anyone has an idea of what might be going on, please mail to one of the
addresses below.
