I appreciate this is a bit 'off-topic', but here is the brief situation.
We have an AlphaServer-1000a Mailbus-400 system put in by Digital as a
bespoke operation in Feb-97. This involved the supply of hardware and
consultancy/engineering expertise to install and configure it.
This was quite involved (well it seemed so to me) as it was a replacement
for a Mailbus-1 system running DECnet-VAX extensions, had to interface with
ALL-IN-1 via XMR, HP openmail and some internally written directory synching
software. This system has DUNIX V3.2G, DECnet-OSI, x.500 directory
services, x.500 directory synchroniser (xdsu), Mailbus-400 mta and SMTP
gateways.
The system documentation is really quite excellent in its discussion of the
internal configuration etc.
We need to upgrade this to a millennium compliant o/s (we would like Dunix
v4.0d + jumbo-3 as a minimum) plus the latest versions of these products.
This is a sensitive system with which we don't have much internal expertise.
It sits in a corner and just works. I am reluctant to touch it!
Now, I am looking at two possibilities:
1. Turn it off (no really - there is not much traffic going thru it now)
2. Upgrade it.
I would like option 1 but need to pursue number 2 in parallel.
I have tried to contact the original Mailbus engineer without success. With
a name like 'Mike Smith' you get a lot of matches!! I have gone in a circle
around Compaq offices trying to get a contact within a messaging group.
We are looking for somebody who can price up the entire upgrade job, to be
done as an out sourced project.
Does anybody have a name and a number, or email address of such a group
within Compaq UK?
I found a 'contact us' information page at:
http://www.compaq.com/solutions/messaging/contactus/index.html
but this does not list main land Europe!
I also found this:
http://www.compaq.co.uk/service/infoform.asp?referrer_title=Compaq+Internet+
Exchange&x=166&y=12
as a reference. Its another 'leave your name and we'll contact you' web
pages. Its at least within Compaq UK, but is, maybe, more Exchange biased.
Also, I don't have much faith in these 'leave your details and well contact
you' pages. Nobody ever seems to.
If you know of a contact for this sort of consultancy, either within Compaq
UK or within a service company, please drop me a mail with some details.
Many thanks - Tony
