SCSI ID order on AS 2100A

An AlphaServer 2100A came into my hands and I'm trying to
install Tru64 UNIX on it. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the
SCSI busses is baffling me. This may be seen as an unrelated
hardware issue, in which case I will accept chastisement; I'm
hoping the intent to use the Right Stuff on the box will
expiate the sin. :-)

The box, as usual, has two internal StorageWorks shelves,
one wide and one narrow. My experience with these shelves
in the past led me to expect the slots to have positional
unit numbers 0-7, top to bottom. Instead, both seem to
follow the positional ID sequence 0,4,1,5,2,6,3. This
is clearly some sort of interleaved order, I suspect for
something to do with RAID, but I don't want nor need it.
The system came with no documentation; is there any way
I can reset the order to 0-7?

I will summarise (of course!) if I survive execration.
