Thanks to:
John P Speno <speno_at_isc.upenn.edu>
Graham Allan <ALLAN_at_mnhep1.hep.umn.edu>
Both of whom suggested Patch kit 1 for V4.0E. After some work here looking
at our systems, and some very hard questioning of
the people on site, the culprit turned out to be:
an unplugged cable!!!!
Need I add any diatribes on the need to ask the simple questions enough
times until one gets a "real answer". Apparently when I asked the 1st time
if all the cables were still connected, I didn't get the right answer.
Thanks for your help!
Regards
One of our printers, to which I have only remote access via dial-up
(arrgh), is now refusing to print on V4.0E.
It was printing earlier today, and those on site say they changed nothing.
I can spool a job using lpr -Plp0, for example, and that command returns
with no apparent error. Yet looking at the lpr.log
file shows the following:
May 24 14:45:04 impact1 lpd[31558]: lpd started
May 24 14:45:45 impact1 lpd[31569]: lp0: Daemon filter 'f' terminated (-1)
May 24 14:45:45 impact1 lpd[31569]: lp0: filter/access error for dfA000impact1
and the job never prints.
lpstat shows:
# lpstat -t
System default destination: lp
Scheduler is running
Output for printer lp is sent to /dev/ttya04s
Output for printer lp1 is sent to /dev/ttya05s
lp:
printer is on device '/dev/ttya04s' speed 9600
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present
lp1:
printer is on device '/dev/ttya05s' speed 9600
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present
Requests on lp:
Mon May 24 14:45:45 1999:
no entries
Requests on lp1:
Mon May 24 14:46:41 1999:
no entries
looking at the status entry for the lpd for that printer reveals:
# more /var/spool/lpd/status
Mon May 24 14:45:45 1999:
I redid the /etc/printcap entry since someone there was trying to suppress
burst pages, and thinking they may have inserted
a bad character by mistake, I re-created it;
/etc/printcap now reads:
# cat /etc/printcap

The printer is an old ribbon style impact printer, so the unknown printer
entry seemed find, and was working fine.
/usr/lbin/lpf is as follows:
# ls -l /usr/lbin/lpf
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 24576 Nov 13 1998 /usr/lbin/lpf
#
Any and all suggestions apprciated. I will sumarized.
Thanks and regards,
Bruce
