As is often the case, Dr. Blinn set me on the right path. This problem is
caused
by a factory kernel build in T64U 4.0E/F; there is no time zone set, so the
default setting (/etc/zoneinfo/sources/factory) is used. I had set the
timezone as
part of the system config, so all that was needed to fix things up was a
kernel
rebuild & reboot.
Thanks to all who replied, and to Dave Sill for running this list--it's
awesome.
