Dear Managers,
quite a while ago (in Oct 1996) it was announced on the list that there is
a problem with mountd when the client has multiple interfaces and IP
addresses. The mount request will be refused if the address is not the
first one in the list.
Here is the SUMMARY Guillaume Gerard wrote about the problem in 1996:
http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/tru64-unix-managers/9610/msg00091.html
Meanwhile I am experiencing similar problems on an nfs server running
DU4.0d. amd mounts from clients with multiple interfaces are rejected
frequently, but not always.
I have done a lot tcpdump'ing and studying of dns logfiles to be sure that
the client-side amd and the dns system are not the problem, so I would
think that it must be the mountd. mountd is returning a 'permission
denied' message to the mount call from the amd - as I said frequently, but
not always. I have not been able to detect any pattern except that when a
request failed it is likely that it will fail again after a few seconds,
and vice versa.
The server is not patched (yet), but I didnt see any evidence for a
suitable mountd patch in the most recent patch cluster of 19990208. Can it
be that the problem of 1996 is still not fixed ? Has anyone on the list
experience (good/or bad) with nfs mount requests from hosts with multiple
ip addresses ? Any hints what I could do to trace the problem down even
further ?
Cheers
Goetz
