hi folks,
An associate of mine managed to perform the egregious act of 'rm *' as root,
while in the / directory of his XP1000 running DU 4.0e.
Needless to say, this caused a good deal of pain, especially considering
his and my unfamiliarity with DU (this is the only station we have access
to). No thanks to an AdvFS root partition, we managed to get the system
booting again by copying osf_boot and vmunix off the install CD, and replaced
the essential /bin and /var links, so the system at least functions to some
degree currently.
Unfortunately, there must be more missing because graphics fail to initialize
and CDE doesn't get started. I'm sure there were other links and files in /
which got wiped...but we have no other reference systems to refer to in the
quest for the identity of such files.
Would some kind soul(s) mail me the output of an 'ls -al /' on their DU 4.0E
system?
Also needless to say, I have insisted he change his backup policies on this
machine...
thanks much in advance,
