SUMMARY: DE500s and nfs_ifconfig in ASE - part 1

This issue is still on-going, but I'd thought I'd send out a summary so far
as there are a couple of good points to get out.

Firstly I am assured by Compaq that the DE500-BA card only drop the link for
a fraction of a second, therefore the delay I'm seeing is being introduced
by the network around it. I'm told that the link drop on this card is
particular to this card only. There is about to be a new DE series released
soon, the DE600 (single port) and DE600 (dual port), which does not drop the
link. These are due in the next couple of months - however I'm not sure to
what level of qualification they will be when released.

We have done a lot of work with our network people to tie down the problem.
So far it has improved by ensuring that:

fast start is enable on the switch port.
if the DE500 is set to a fixed value, i.e. fast - the switch port is also
set to this and not to auto-negotiate.

So far we're getting delays at one site of up to 3 seconds from a telnet
session - which is probably as good as it gets. At the other site we are
still seeing longer delays, but this is almost definitely due to some
network problem. More to follow.....maybe.

Dave.

Subject: DE500s and nfs_ifconfig in ASE

I'm just in the process on setting up a two node ASE cluster, using ASE 1.5
and UNIX 4.0E (patch kit 1). The systems are using DE500s set in fast mode.
When I use /var/ase/sbin/nfs_ifconfig to set up an alias IP name for a
service via the main interface I get about a 20-25 second delay before it
completes. When adding or modifying services this causes all sorts of
problems with ASE. I have configured several other ASE clusters on our
network - however these are using fddi cards which register the alias
immediately.

My question is has anyone else experienced this kind of problem with the
DE500s or could it be something specific to our network, or the subnet these
systems are in?
