I/O error isolated to three directories.

Dear all TRU64 folk,
I am running 4.0D on a very remote site. Recent vdump backups have
been failing and on investigation I have tracked the error down to three
directories (all sitting within one directory and containing no
sub-directories or files). Directories are in an advfs filesystem of modest
size (1.6Gb)
The I/0 error is happening with vdump but is also reported with "ls
-l" ("ls" is okay), "du" and anything else that I think looks at the i-node
for the directory.
I have cycled the machine in the hope that a simple fsck will repair
the problem but to no avail.
I have attempted removing the directories - no luck... and copying
directories on top of the corrupt ones - no luck.

Is "verify" my best answer and if so how long should this take and
what are the best options to use and what are the pitfalls.
Is there a better answer than "verify"???

Eagerly awaiting any advice.

Sincerely,

Malcolm Condie
