boot genvmunix

Here is simple question:

I have heard many times that you *must* boot genvmunix before you
reconfigure your kernel to account for new hardware. Why is this so ? Why
cant you just take the current vmunix ? I have compiled new kernels both
from genvmunix and vmunix many times in many situations, often in direct
comparison, and I have never ever noticed a difference.

Thanks in advance
