In response to my posting about the previously quoted Fortran 90 error,
I received information from Paul Stern, Dennis MacDonnel, Gwen Pettigrew,
Gordon Lawson, Pat Lampert, Paul Sand, and Tom Blinn.

To get right to the point, I learned about the fverify utility whereupon
I found out largely what Dr. Blinn suggested, that symbolic links to some
of the components in the Fortran Runtime Library 3.84 were clobbered when
I used setld to remove an earlier version of that package.

Rather than try to recreate the missing symbolic links, I deleted the
RTL and then reinstalled it. This solved the problem nicely. What had not
occurred to me was that deleting an earlier version of software with the
setld command can mess up later versions.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question.
