narrow and wide SCSI on same controller

We threw an old narrow drive (RZ29B-VA) into an AlphaServer 1200 along with
some wide drives (RZ1DB-VW) and now I am wondering if that is going to make
everything on that SCSI bus look narrow. Does anybody know how that works
-- is it specific to certain controllers or is it a common thing?
