Thanks to all who responded. Especially Joe Fletcher, who hit the nail
on the head: not a problem with the TruNix box at all, but a network hub
slowly dying. Russ Fish gets runner-up honors by pointing out that
botched autonegotiation between the NIC and hub can cause similar
behavior.
To complete the story, by yesterday afternoon, the problem had
spread to other workstations connected to this hub, pretty much
absolving the TruNix box of any guilt. By early this morning, the hub
had completely failed, which convinced the network people to change it
;-). All's fine now.
Problem Synopsis:
Most services hang on a Tru64 Unix system. Telnet, for example,
hangs just after the login dialog. Ftp hangs at the first 'dir', smtp
hangs during connection setup, etc.
Investigation shows that only small packets are getting to the box:
ping -s 100 works fine, but ping -s 250 doesn't (no response).
Editorial Comment:
Bizarre failure mode for a hub! You learn something new every day, I
guess.
Thanks again,
-j
