System won't boot due to a kernel memory fault

I have an AlphaStation 500/333. The machine won't boot after a cold start.
This is the first time I had to cold start the machine since I installed the
duv40eas0002-19990617 patch for DU 4.0e. The machine worked fine, even
rebooted since then.

The error I get when booting is:

trap: invalid memory read access from kernel mode

        faulting virtual address 0x0000000300000005
        pc of faulting instruction 0xfffffc00002666e8
ra contents at time of fault 0x0000000000000168
sp contents at time of fault 0xffffffffa6caf5do

panic (cpu 0): kernel memory fault

dump: no primary swap, no explicit dumpdev
nowhere to put header, giving up

I would appreciate any help regarding this.

Thanks in advance
