Problems setting up a new Drive

I'm trying to install an 18GB hard drive into my AlphaStation 500/333 running
DU4.0c. The drive is an IBM UltraStar 18ES. It is a single-ended Wide SCSI
drive. Physically, I had no problems putting the drive in one of the open
bays of that machine. I assigned it a SCSI # of 8 via the jumpers. When I
booted up the machine, I checked to see if the machine "saw" the drive in the
console mode. It seems to me that the machine sees the drive.

>>>show dev
......
.......
dka800.8.0.9.0 DKA800 IBM DNES-318350W SA30
......
......

I then booted into single-user mode. I created the device files my doing:

# cd /dev
# ./MAKEDEV rz8

I then tried to write the disklabel by doing....

# disklabel -rw /dev/rrz8c rz99

>From what I read the "rz99" is an arbitrary thing that can be anything as
long as it doesn't conflict with an entry to the disktab file. I know that
using rz99 is not my problem cause I tried different things.

Once I tried that though. I got an error message that no such device or
address could be found. I went into the /dev directory and saw the device
files for rz8....

What am I missing or doing wrong here? From what I have seen on the archives
of the list, no modification needs to be done to the disktab file nor does
the kernel need to be rebuilt. I therefore did not do any of those things.
Am I wrong with regards to those assumptions?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
