Color depth on Xdec

Can someone please please please tell me how to increase color depth on
the x display from 8-bit (256 colors) to 16-bit or higher?

We have several d_unix 4.0D and two 4.0F machines, and ALL of them run 256
color displays! we need more colors on the displays!
