My most sincere apologies on the extremely late summary. Unfortunately,
no real solution was found.

Problem description:
4.0e RIS client died, unable to find RIS home directory
on server. Client and server configuration apparently OK.

Workaround applied:
Installed a CD-ROM drive from another machine, installed locally.
