Subject: Problems with ftp dying
Hi everyone.
We're having some strange problems with ftp since we upgraded to 4.0D
(patchkit 3) from 4.0B.
(Alpha 2100A ) (Using installupdate installation method) Firmware also
upgraded to 5.3
ftp used to work fine, however now, it just won't transfer files (It was
fine before the upgrade)
Now, we're getting something REALLY wierd....
We ftp to an NT Server (V4, patchkit 4), as a major part of our
applications....
FTP: From unix, PUT files on NT - Transfers approx 16k, then stops
and timeout
FTP: From NT, GET files from Unix - Transfers approx. 16k, then stops
and timeout
FTP: From Unix, GET files from NT: OK
FTP: From NT, PUT filesin Unix: OK
ie. We can't seem to suck files from unix, or push them out from unix to
the NT box.
Only works for very small files.
The NT has *not* changed. The only changes were the OS to 4.0D
Checked netstat - Routes OK - No collisions, errors, etc. Rules are OK
TCPDUMP - Traced packets, seems to go ok, then the packets just stop until
a timeout is recieved.
ie. tcpdump -vv port ftp
Network config: OK - 100Mb Half Duplex NON Negotiate on BOTH the Unix box
AND switch it is connected to.
No errors in /var/adm/mes*
FTP just seems to stop dead. Only time it DOES work is if you transfer
SMALL files. (ie a few kb)
We have another unix box, (Alpha , also 4.0D, lets call it "fred") Tried
this to the NT box - Same results.
HOWEVER.....
"fred" was never used with ftp to the NT before, so for all we know, "fred"
may always have had the same problem, we just didn't find out.
I know it looks like the NT box is at fault - BUT.. Nothing has changed on
it, and it used to work fine on the 4.0B version.
Any ftp parameters to look at. Oh, ftp timeout is set at the default (900)
but we reduced it (ftpd -t 200 in inetd.conf ) due to all the timeouts.
Unfortunatly these ftp scripts are a pretty major part of the applications
we use.
The ftp's are called by cron. They haven't changed either. Even running
ftp from the prompt still timeouts during transfer.
ftpd and ftp don't seem to have changed with the Ver D upgrade.
ftp to NT from a PC, and it works fine, in both directions.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before???????
Thanks,
Dirk.
