got a few responses from "don't do it" to "use vi or usermod". The problem
with using something other than vipw is that if you go back and use it after
you've successfully changed the home dir using vi and mkpasswd, it will
still barf with the same message - making me think that's it's something in
vipw. So I took the easy option suggested by Paul Chapman and made a change
to /.profile. If anyone wants to comment on why vipw causes the barf it'll
be useful for future reference.
