Thanks a lot to all of you who have responded to this. It seems that
everyone vote for Apache. A few also mentions Netscape but there is a little
uncertainty to whether i is free or not. Anyhow, there is a consensus that
Netscape got too many little 'quirks' and that Apache just works and works.

Now to my second question, what to do. I have been politely asked to be more
specific about this, but I think I will withdraw it and go RTFM. The best
answers came from henri Sudelin
"Download, compile, install, edit config files, run."
And Arnaud Veron
        "1 - download latest apache ( 1.3.6 )
         2 - Untar and compile.
         3 - Configure and run."
And Andres Hencken
"- download it, create a httpd account for it, compile"
-Which all seems perfectly simple, so I will try.

Frank Worther mentioned a server especially suited for Oracle. I will quote
him here:
"An example of a site built with AOLServer and Oracle is
http://www.photo.net/, an online community of photographers and web nerds.
Philip Greenspun, the owner of photo.net, also has written a book about
using AOLServer and Oracle, and he has made the book and most of the
software he has written freely available. See
http://www.photo.net/wtr/thebook/ . Even if you don't use AOLServer,
Philip's book is worth reading. He's a great programmer, fine writer, and
excellent photographer. You'll learn a lot from this site about what makes
a good web service regardless of what software you actually use."

Richard Bemrose mentioned a whitepaper commissioned by Microsoft: "Web and
File Server Comparison"
