I asked for advice about whether to install Tru64 UNIX (aka Digital UNIX)
version 4.0D or 4.0F on my AlphaServer 1000 (currently at 3.2d). I
received replies from
        Jirik Stephen <Sjirik_at_citipower.com.au>
        LARRY.CLEGG_at_LPL.COM
        Michael Bucholtz <mbucholt_at_ceiss.org>
        alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
        Richard Bemrose <rb237_at_phy.cam.ac.uk>
        Dr. Tom Blinn <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
        Ann Karcich <karcich_at_cs.rochester.edu>
        Tom Webster <webster_at_ssdpdc.lgb.cal.boeing.com>

The consensus was that either version would work OK on my system.
They are binary compatible, with 4.0F supporting newer hardware
and apparently incorporating many bug fixes, and a few new features.

Stephen mentioned that 4.0F no longer includes Adobe Display PostScript
(not a consideration for me). Clegg is running both versions on
different systems and finds 4.0F cleaner and less buggy. But Karcich
finds 4.0F less stable than 4.0D on a Trucluster system. Alan
mentioned that 4.0F requires a larger root partition than 4.0D (256 Mb
recommended rather than 128 Mb).

Dr. Blinn said that 4.0D will continue to be supported by Compaq
until the end of the year 2000, whereas support for 4.0F will cease
6 months after 4.0G comes out, which will probably be before the end
of 1999. That means 4.0D is likely to be supported longer.

Considering that I have an old system and that 4.0D will likely be
supported longer (meaning I won't have to go through this upgrade
again as soon), I've decided to install 4.0D on my AlphaServer 1000.

Thanks for all the responses.
