binmail can't create lock

I am getting numerous messages following this format:

   ----- Transcript of session follows -----
binmail: cannot create lock file /usr/spool/mail/david.lock
550 <david_at_saturn.math.uaa.alaska.edu>... Can't create output


Earlier I had to make some chmod directories used by sendmail to make
it work properly; however, I did not change the spool directory.

Current permissions for /usr/spool/mail:

drwxrwxr-x 3 root system 16384 Aug 10 11:43 ./


Also some of the mailboxes in /usr/spool/mail are group owned by
system while others are group owned by mail. Which is the preferred
setup?
