We have two machines running Digital Unix 4.0E and 4.0F
respectively.

The output in /usr/adm/syslog.dated/*/lpr.log on both machines
contains what appears to be debugging information. That is, a lot of noise,
unless you are actually trying to debug a printing problem.

When I did a grep for lpd on a full process listing I found that lpd
is running without the -l option.

Does anyone know how to turn debugging off?

Please reply directly to me and I will summarise.

        Thanks,

        David

Hi

You need to edit the line in /etc/syslog.conf that reads

lpr.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log

and change it to something like

lpr.info /var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log

Info prints some (possibly) useful information, but not nearly as much as
debug.

You need to modify your /etc/syslog.conf so the line that looks like:
lpr.debug	/var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log
Looks like the following instead
lpr.info	/var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log
Hope that helps...

 David,
You can make a change in you /etc/syslog.conf.
Change the lpr.debug to lpr.info (or what you want).
To get more info man syslogd.

Edit your /etc/syslog.conf file. Change the line that reads lpd.debug to
lpd.warning.

David-
Not sure about lpd flags, but I imagine that you could decrease
the verbosity of what is logged by changing the log level in
/etc/syslog.conf and HUP'ing syslogd.
It looks like out of the box...
lpr.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log
maybe change to
lpr.warn /var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log
or similar

I don't think you can stop lpd from being verbose. You can instead alter
the syslog level you log for the lpr facility.
Instead of lpr.debug, try lpr.notice or lpr.info.
