Secure passwords?

Hello, Managers,

I inherited a mixed environment -- Solaris 7 (SPARC
and x86) and DU 4.0 (B and D, soon to be all D)
running NIS with one of the Suns as the master. NIS
takes care of all the user accounts, but I was
wondering if anyone could recommend a way to secure
the root account on those machines.

Is there a way to use shadow passwords, as I've done
on the Sun machines? Is enhanced security the only
alternative?

I'm not supposed to be a system administrator, so
pardon the naivete of the question.

Thanks, -- Bennet
