Hi,

I have the feeling that there is a slight bug in lpd as shipped with
4.0F + PK#1: the call to syslog() has the log level in the wrong
place.

>From lpr.log:

Sep 18 17:58:09 amalia lpd[631]: NOTICE -- lpd: MASTER DAEMON STARTED
Sep 18 17:58:09 amalia lpd[631]: WARNING -- Wizard to SysAdmin: please
issue this command to fix your print setup: 'chown daemon
/usr/spool/lj4000n-cy'
Sep 18 17:58:09 amalia lpd[631]: WARNING -- Wizard to SysAdmin: please
issue this command to fix your print setup: 'chown daemon
/usr/spool/lj4000n-uk'
Sep 18 18:59:56 amalia lpd[15610]: NOTICE -- lpd: MASTER DAEMON
STARTED
Sep 18 18:59:57 amalia lpd[15611]: DEBUG -- displayq: entered
displayq(), printer lp
Sep 18 18:59:57 amalia lpd[15611]: DEBUG -- getport: entered
getport(), rhost laserjet.cy.albourne.com
Sep 18 19:08:48 amalia lpd[15714]: DEBUG -- displayq: entered
displayq(), printer lp

I have the feeling that these are priorities which ended up in the
string (from the syslog(3) man page):

  void syslog(
          int priority,
          const char *format,...);

where priority is something like LOG_NOTICE. My syslog.conf is not
logging lpr stuff beyond the warning - before you ask.

On a separate note: why is the default syslog.conf as shipped with
4.0F + PK#1 a pretty verbose

kern.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/kern.log
user.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/user.log
mail.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/mail.log
daemon.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/daemon.log
auth.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/auth.log
syslog.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/syslog.log
lpr.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/lpr.log

etc.? It is a bit over the top...

Arrigo
