SUMMARY: /usr/bin/crontab -e not working in 4.0F?

It turns out the problem was something to do with the editor I was using
(mg, a variant of gnu emacs). For some reason, this editor works fine with
vipw but not crontab.

Thanks to all who responded.

My original question follows...

I recently installed a 4.0F system from a RIS server and added patch kit 1
to it. When I tried to use "crontab -e" to edit a crontab entry, either
as root or as a user, crontab complains after the editing that

crontab: cannot create your crontab file in the crontab directory.

If I use a copy of crontab from 4.0B or 4.0D, it works fine, and the
crontab is correctly updated. This would seem to indicate that the
 crontab program is broken.

Has anyone else seen this? I checked the archives but didn't find
anything that looks like this problem.
