Piping tar into gzip

I am having problems with the GNU version of tar and wanted to know the
proper way to tar some files and pipe them through gzip, if any. I want to
accomplish the same as tar zcf <archive_name> <files_and_directories> using
the tar and gzip that comes with 4.0D. Am I reinventing the wheel?
