Hello. For a while I have been messing with Linux, until I bought an
older version of DEC Unix 4.0a. I am now trying to install it on my
AlphaStation 200 with not a lot of success. I have updated the firmware
with the cd that shipped with the set, that seemed to work ok. I then
started to boot from the OS cd... Now, at this point, I am not sure if
this is normal, but while it is "booting" it tells me that device dka300
is not ready while the cd tracks... But, after a while, it starts up.
Right after it switches video mode, it dies with the following error:
Panic (cpu0) vfs_mountroot: cannot mount root
syncing disks... done
Dump: No primary swap, no explicit dumpdev
Nowhere to put header, giving up
cp - SAVE_TERM routine to be called
cp - SAVE_TERM exited with hlt_req=1 r0= 00000000.00000000
halted cpu0
halt code=5
halt instruction executed pc=fffffc0000405040
I am using the commands that are in the book for booting off of a cd
which is:
>>>boot dka300
I seem to remember when I installed Linux on this machine, that, even
though the book said, "Just type this..." I ended up having to add a
flag or two telling it where the hdd was. I can find no reference to
what that flag might be.
Thanks for any help.
