file systems on 4.0d

I've installed du4.0d on my alpha and have got most of it working which I'm
quite proud of as I have no unix experience whatsoever.

I do however have one major problem...

I have an external raid cabinet (6 x 2.0gb hard disks) under raid 5, I know
the config and the hardware is OK.

when I do a df in unix it does not see the raid partition, just the internal
mirrorerd set that I've used as the system.

I know that I need to create a new file system on the device by doing a

newfs /dev/rre1c

although this comes back with

# newfs /dev/rre1c
Warning: /dev/rre1c is marked in use for 4.2BSD in the disklabel.
If you continue with the operation you can
possibly destroy existing data.
CONTINUE? [y/n] y
write error: 20551679
wtfs: I/O error

Can anyone give me an idiots guide on how I should bring this set on line.

Regards and sincere thanks
