The question:
Have an ES40 arriving tomorrow. I'm coming with a 10/100 card and a DEGPA. I'd
like to run it with the gig card from the start. 4.0f supports the card, from
what I've read. Any other hitches? How 'bout from both the console and from
ifconfig. Any hitcheds in turning off auto-negotiation and having it run at
1000FD?

There's no driver support for the DEGPA in the console. Modern consoles
recognize it. There really isn't any supported needed unless you want to
boot over it (in which case that can't happen).
The manpage ('man alt') for V4.0F will give you details on how to turn off
autonegotiation.
