Now I finally found out what it was all about. What I wondered most was what
one should expect from the file system. Something like HSM that would work
with AdvFS but not with UFS or the opposite.
No, HSM is independent of the file system. There is actually a kernel
interface XDSM for data storage management defined by the Open Group
(Xopen).
This interface defines how one process can be notified about events
in the file system such as "now is this and that file being accessed"
As POSIX files support "holes" (unallocated regions), the storage manager
can either fill holes in files or "punch" holes.
So, you just buy a HSM license for Networker or any other appropriate system
and it will do the job.
