Hi managers !
I have a dual-boot Digital 3000/500 whose one system disk I just
yesterday upgraded from 4.0B to 4.0D.
The logs do not show any problems, all merges seem to have been
successful.
(I took administration of that machine over at 3.2C, upgraded to
4.0, then 4.0B; no open problems in the update logs.
At 4.0, when CDE came, I modified the screen to have "Terminal"
as the default action of the fourth field in the front panel,
using MB3 on the popup menu and selecting "Copy to Main Panel".
In 4.0 and 4.0B, it worked without problems.)
When I now login as 'root' on the console, I can open my first
(and only) terminal window. Any attempt to open another one fails
without any visible message, be it in the first CDE workspace
or in any other. This applies if I hit the icon directly and
using the popup list as well - no difference.
Doing the same as normal user, I can open several terminal windows
in any workspace without problems.
To resolve the issue, I booted from the other disk (clean install
of 4.0F) and compared the files in the root FS. Of course, the
differences are huge, but the only one that seemed relevant to me
was the lack of the machine's own name (as well as "loopback")
in "/etc/hosts". I added them manually, but it did not help.
Searching Deja ("comp.unix.osf.*"), I found no hint. Searching
the mail archive, I got a result count of some 16000 - the first
120 were misleading (the lack of "(a OR b) AND (c OR d)" search
expressions proved to be significant).
So I ask you about any hints, where to look or what to change.
I will summarize.
TIA and have a nice weekend,
Joerg Bruehe
