Thanks to Ronny Aliahu <Ronny.Eliahu_at_disney.com> for the update:
| Hi Gunther,
|
| I should have send the follow-up message. I checked with
| Compaq regarding
| Patch Kit 5 and here is the response I received from them:

| Hi Ronny,
|
| pk5 has the same problem. Please do not install this. We have already
| checked this. Engineering is still having problems in isolating the
| problem.
|
| I would update you as soon as I hear from them.
|
| Thankyou for using Compaq Support

| another response I received from Compaq is:
|
| Hi Ronny:
|
| This is the last update which we got from Engineering on the
| increased backup timings.

| ``Increased backup timings'' by NNTPD::"rmorris_at_zk3.dec.com" (Rich

|
| This problem has been reproduced by the support engineering group.
| They noticed that the amount of system time was much higher during
| the vdump after the pk4 kit was installed. They suspect that the
| reason that the backup takes twice as long is that the tape drive
| is no longer streaming because of the increased system time.
|
| The support engineering group do not yet understand what is causing
| the increased system time when running vdump with the pk4 kit but
| they are continuing to investigate and will let you know when they
| find out the cause of the problem.

| Subject: AdvFS cloning under 4.0D Patch Kit 0005
|
|
| Hi,
|
| I have a question about AdvFS fileset cloning under Patch Kit 0005 for
| Digital Unix 4.0D:
|
| After the patch, if you clone filesets and look at them, you get:
|
| root_domain#root 307200 58639 243440 20% /
| /proc 0 0 0
| 100% /proc
| usr_domain#usr 1593176 687270 885960
| 44% /usr
| var_domain#var 512000 61997 441648
| 13% /var
| tmp_domain#tmp 204800 24 198272
| 1% /tmp
| root_domain#root_clone 307200 0 243440 0%
| /clone/root_domain/root
| usr_domain#usr_clone 1593176 0 885960 0%
| /clone/usr_domain/usr
| var_domain#var_clone 512000 0 441648 0%
| /clone/var_domain/var
| tmp_domain#tmp_clone 204800 0 198272 0%
| /clone/tmp_domain/tmp
|
| whereas, on a system running Patch Kit 00003 only, you get:
|
| Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available
| Capacity Mounted
| on
| root_domain#root 262144 55859 199208 22% /
| /proc 0 0 0
| 100% /proc
| usr_domain#usr 2097152 740251 1302976
| 37% /usr
| tmp_domain#tmp 257024 33 250488
| 1% /tmp
| u01_domain#u01 4189184 1295646 2879120
| 32% /u01
| u02_domain#u02 4189184 3569912 578976
| 87% /u02
| u03_domain#u03 4189184 1563082 2576552
| 38% /u03
| root_domain#root_clone 262144 62936 199208 25%
| /clone/root_domain/root
| usr_domain#usr_clone 2097152 794176 1302976 38%
| /clone/usr_domain/usr
| tmp_domain#tmp_clone 257024 6536 250488 3%
| /clone/tmp_domain/tmp
| u01_domain#u01_clone 4189184 1310064 2879120 32%
| /clone/u01_domain/u01
| u02_domain#u02_clone 4189184 3610208 578976 87%
| /clone/u02_domain/u02
| u03_domain#u03_clone 4189184 1612632 2576552 39%
| /clone/u03_domain/u03
|
| Note; that on the system runing Patch Kit 0005, the "Used"
| and "Capacity"
| fields are 0%.
|
| I saw this in Patch Kit 0004, and saw some email from others
| saying that it
| slowed down fileset backups
| and caused a few other problems. As such I waited until Patch
| kit 0005, but
| the same condition seems to
| occur.
|
| Is this an expected condition? Why is this different? I've
| never seen this
| occurence, until the last two
| patch kits, and I have no idea why this is now occuring.
|
| Any help/suggestions/thoughts appreciated.
|
| Thanks,
| Gunther
