LAN monitoring s/w

I wonder if anybody knows a (public domain) s/w for Alpha (first choice) or
Sun Solaris (second choice) which is able to monitor a LAN in case of high
load, and tell which machine is generating which percentage of packets.

Yesterday late afternoon I noticed a remarkable slow down on our LAN (I was
working across an Alpha and an NT machine thru Citrix and SAMBA), the only
thing I was able to do was to look at the front panel of our hubs and see that
the network load was "above 30%".

I suspect a user which left a tar backup on DAT running in background (either
rsh or NFS access), but I could not go and look on some 30-40 machines
(moreover, there are other institutes on other floors in the same building
sharing somehow the LAN).
