Long due summary, unfortunately unsatisfactory (for me). I did not find a
quick solution, but our transient problem went away anyhow ...
Thanks anyhow to Joe Fletcher Andrew Brennan Daniel West Jim Belonis Joehnk,
John Gary Gladney Nancy Davis
I had three mentions of a s/w called "etherman" by Curtin University
(Australia), one of a DOS s/w called "EthLoad", and later a reference to a
site
http://www.cotse.com/sniffers.htm.
Unfortunately I'm unable to retrieva stuff from the latter site. Apparently I
get incomplete tar files with "unexpected EOF"). I found several other sites
with various (old) versions of etherman, but apparently this is no longer
mantained at Curtin University, it has been transferred to www.ndg.com.au and
is now a commercial product.
I retrieved a binary of etherman for Alpha from one of the other site
(apparently there are no versions for Solaris, just SunOS 4.x), but I was
unable to have it running (on my Alpha 255 it did run, but opened no X
window; on another Alpha 200 it did flash a window and soon crashed).
In addition I had
- a reference to a commercial package (
http://www.netscout.com)
[no, we do not intend to spend money for our little problem]
- another one to Tcl/TK SNMP monitor for Solaris
(
http://wwwhome.cs.utwente.nl/~schoenw/scotty/)
[no I do not have tickle on my Alpha, may be I'll pass the info to one of my
colleagues on Sun when he's back from mission]
Since my problem went away, I will quit my search.
