Vanishing DAT drives.

Dear Managers,

I have an urgent problem with TLZ09 DAT drives. Basically, some of
the drives across our systems vanish, apparently randomly, and cease to be
shown by the "scu show edt" command or respond to tape access commands,
producing "No such device or file" errors.

The drive(s) affected can be restarted quite easily; if it is in a
shelf by itself, cycle power on the shelf to reset the drive and then issue
a "scu scan edt" command to force the system to check for the presence of
SCSI devices. If it is not in a shelf by itself, then the whole system,
including the shelf containing the tape drive must be power cycled to reset
the tape drive.

This behaviour is seen on Alpha 4100's running 4.0d. Any help would
be gratefully received as I'm new to DEC/Compaq kit and OS (I have a Sun
background), thanks.

Mark Foster.
