Question about the use of DRD vs. raw device

Hello,
I'm in the process if installing Oracle parallel server on two DS20 and have
a question about my understanding of DRD devices.
If I understand correctly, when two machines have DRD disks over a shared
SCSI, only one of them has physical access to the disks, while the other
'pipes' r/w request through the network (or the MC) to the other one which
does the actual disk r/w.
Why cant both the computers r/w directly to /dev/rrz* ? from a test I made,
it seems that they can do it without any data loss.
Isn't the DRD way slower?

Thanks in advance,
Or Tal.
