changes to /etc/exports not recognised

Hi

on 4.0e

Ive made changes to /etc/exports and can not get nfsd/mountd to notice
them. I have sent HUP to both nfsd and mountd. I have restarted nfsd and
mountd. showmount is returning host names that are no longer in
/etc/exports. I can find no error messages.
